In October 2013 the Templer Academy Schools Trust (TAST) invited 12 architect companies who they perceived as the most active in education sector work in the South West of England to enter competitive bids for a large new primary school in the Teign Valley.
The competition comprised on the first part, a design for the new primary school, and on the second part, all-in fee proposals for the consultancy services needed to manage all of the building development works across the TAST estate of four schools over the following years.
TFQ won this competition both in terms of the design of the proposed new school and for the competitiveness of their combined consultancy fee offers and were appointed by TAST to manage all of their projects.
The key to the design proposal is design flexibility, resulting in a building form that can be easily adapted to suit various configurations and site constraints whilst ensuring it can be constructed within an appropriate budget. Importantly the design aims to accommodate future extensions allowing the natural growth and changing school needs to be met.
